I’ve used thinner line widths as well as variant width brushes and all sorts of crap before. I didn’t start out with fixed-width ones, that’s actually a more recent development comparatively to how long I’ve been drawing (started at onesie 305). And even now I occasionally do stuff where I use thinner lines (eg 922, 900, 864, etc), so yeah. Not sure where that suggestion came from, but I gave it a shot anyway.
As I thought it turned out not much to my liking. I can’t claim that this is a fair shot at getting back into variable width line-work, since it takes time for things like this to settle in and find their potential, but I can’t say that what I’ve experienced here intrigued me much in any way, so I don’t know if I’ll pursue this angle any further.
I think my problem lies more in the way I can exaggerate and bend shapes, in what way I can make poses look interesting and appealing, moreso than what kind of shape the lines themselves have. Just to note too, fixed lines can still evoke a lot of emotion and mood if the rest of the image is up to shape. You can find this being successfully done in Malbeni’s artwork for example.
Thanks for the suggestion though, and I suppose you did get a response drawing out of it after all.
